Dr. Lloyd Whitman
Lloyd Whitman is currently serving as the Assistant to the Director for Science Policy and Planning at the National Science Foundation (NSF), on detail from his position as Chief Scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). At NSF, Lloyd works to identify new opportunities for cooperation and collaboration between NSF and other organizations, coordinates the development and implementation of NSF-wide science policies, and advises the Director on strategic planning, assessment, and policy. He joined NSF in 2019 after serving for over five years at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) in both the Obama and Trump administrations, most recently as the Principal Assistant Director for Physical Sciences and Engineering and co-leader of the Science portfolio. At OSTP, Lloyd oversaw a broad range of S&T areas and national R&D programs and strategies. Prior to joining OSTP, he was the founding Deputy Director of NIST’s Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology, the Department of Commerce’s national nanotechnology user facility. Lloyd has a B.S. in Physics from Brown University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from Cornell University. He has over 160 publications and multiple patents related to his long research career studying nanostructures and their integration into advanced electronic, photonic, and biosensor systems.
