Dr. Andrew Schwartz
Director, Materials Sciences and Engineering Division, Department Of Energy Office of Basic Energy Sciences
Dr. Andrew Schwartz
Dr. Andrew Schwartz serves as Division Director for Materials Sciences and Engineering in the DOE Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES). In this role, he oversees a broad portfolio of support for basic research in condensed matter and materials physics; materials design, discovery, and synthesis; and scattering and instrumentation science. From 2013-2022 Dr. Schwartz was a Senior Technical Advisor in BES, leading the team that manages the Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) program. Dr. Schwartz joined BES in 2008 as Program Manager for the Experimental Condensed Matter Physics (ECMP) program, which supports a diverse research portfolio with major emphasis on topics such as superconductivity, magnetism, spin physics, and low-dimensional systems.
Prior to BES, Dr. Schwartz spent seven years in industry leading a multi-disciplinary scientific and engineering team in the research and development of a new technology for semiconductor metrology. In this role he was actively involved in project planning, strategic planning, budgeting, project execution, and business development.
Dr. Schwartz received a B.A. in physics from Amherst College and an M.S. and Ph.D. in physics from the University of California Los Angeles. His research focused on the electrodynamic response of various materials, including high temperature superconductors, low-dimensional conductors, and colossal magnetoresistive oxides. Dr. Schwartz has co-authored over 30 technical papers and holds seven U.S. patents.
